N-Butanol, also known as Butyl Alcohol or 1 Butanol, is a colorless, mobile liquid of medium volatility with a characteristic banana like odor. It has high miscibility with all common solvents, e. g. alcohols, ketones, aldehydes, ethers, glycols, and aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons but limited miscibility with water. N-Butanol produced naturally by the fermentation of sugars and carbohydrates. While commercially, it is produced through ‘Oxo process’ compirisng catalytic hydroformylation of propylene to create butyraldehyde which is consequently hydrogenated to synthesize N-Butanol.

On the basis of applications, N-Butanol industry is segmented into butyl acrylate and methacrylate esters, glycol ethers, butyl acetate, and plasticizers. Butyl acrylate and methacrylate esters are the major application of N- Butanol accounting for share of almost 49% of the total N-Butanol followed by glycol ethers that occupies 24% of total N-Butanol. While other applications such as n-butyl acetate, direct solvent use, and plasticizers occupy 14%, 7% ccuand 4% of the total N-Butanol produced respectively. Butyl acrylate and methacrylate esters are utilized as a raw material in various products such as adhesives, fiber processing agents, emulsions, acrylic fibers, molding resins, coatings, paints, enamels, lacquers, plastics etc.

All these applications of N-Butanol are employed in various sectors, specially in Construction and Maintenance activities. Hence, on the basis of the functionality of N-Butanol and its derivatives the major end-use industries for N-Butanol include Construction, Chemical Processing, automotive, Industrial, Food and Pharmaceuticals. Rising demands of coatings, lacquers, enamels, emulsions from the Construction sector is likely to boost the demand for N-Butanol in the forecast period. However, the emission of volatile organic compounds from N-Butanol is expected to hamper its market growth due to stringent government regulation.

Outbreak of COVID-19 across the in the first half of 2020, caused nationwide lockdowns and trade restriction. Many industries slowdown their manufacturing process led to disruption in the demand and supply chain. It resulted into the decline in the demand of N-Butanol as major end use industries such as automotive and construction were drastically hit. However, since the latter half of 2020 after the resumption of Industrial operations with their full efficacy to meet the demand of various end-use industries, a speedy recovery is witnesses in the demand for N-Butanol and is expected to propel in the forthcoming years.

Asia Pacific region holds the major share of N-Butanol market and is anticipated to grow significantly over the forecast period owing to the flourishing Automotive and Construction sectors in the region, specially in China and India. Growth in all these sectors lead to the increase in the demand of sealants, adhesives, paints and coatings that consequently would drive N-Butanol market over forecast years in Asia Pacific.

According to ChemAnalyst report, “N-Butanol Market Analysis: Plant Capacity, Production, Operating Efficiency, Technology, Demand & Supply, End-User Industries, Distribution Channel, Regional Demand, 2015-2030”, Major players for N-Butanol globally include BASF, The DOW Chemical Company, Eastman, OQ Chemicals, Sasol, BASF Petronas, PetroChina, Mitsubishi Chemical Company, Sinopec, KH Neochem, and Others.

“N-Butanol and its derivatives, have wide range applications in various industries such as, Construction, Automotive, Chemicals, Food and Pharmaceuticals, Paints and Coatings and Others. Growth in these sectors along with rapid industrialization and urbanization is likely to boost the market for N-butanol in the upcoming years. Moreover, it also uses in textile sector as coating fabric, in consumer goods, paper industry, in cosmetic industry (nail products, make up, hygiene and shaving products). All these applications of N-Butanol are expected to offer a huge potential for the major players to expand their capacities to meet its rising demand and Asia pacific region is expected to be the most lucrative market for N-Butanol.” said Mr. Karan Chechi, Research Director with TechSci Research, a research based global management consulting firm promoting ChemAnalyst.
